ACL Rehabilitation in Hamilton

Strength-led, criteria-based ACL rehab with objective VALD testing at every milestone — so you return to sport when you're genuinely ready, not just when time has passed.

The "6 Months" Myth Is Costing Athletes Their Knees

Research published in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy found that athletes returning to sport before 9 months after ACL reconstruction had a reinjury rate approximately 7 times higher than those who waited — and time alone isn't enough either. What matters is whether your knee has met objective strength and symmetry criteria.

That's why our ACL rehab is built around measured milestones, not calendar dates. Read our full article on the ACL timeline myth.

Early Stage (0–3 months)

Settle swelling, restore full knee extension, re-activate the quadriceps, and rebuild walking and movement confidence — the foundations everything else depends on.

Strength Stage (3–6 months)

Progressive gym-based strength training: squats, deadlifts, single-leg work. The goal is measurable — quad strength approaching symmetry with your other side.

Return-to-Sport Stage (6+ months)

Jumping, landing, agility, and sport-specific drills — with VALD ForceDecks testing at each gate to confirm you've met the criteria before progressing.

Tested, Not Guessed

Before you return to training or competition, we test your strength, power, and limb symmetry on VALD ForceDecks and Dynamo — the same technology used by professional sporting teams. You'll see exactly which return-to-sport criteria you've met and which still need work.

ACL Rehab FAQs

How long does ACL rehabilitation take?

Most athletes need 9–12 months before returning to sport — but the date isn't the deciding factor. Returning before 9 months is associated with a reinjury rate roughly 7 times higher, so we clear you when you've met objective strength and symmetry criteria, not when the calendar says so.

Is ACL rehab covered by ACC?

Usually, yes. ACL ruptures from sport or accidents qualify for ACC cover, which funds a significant portion of your physiotherapy. You don't need a GP referral — we can manage your claim and treatment directly.

Do you work with my surgeon?

Yes. We communicate with your orthopaedic surgeon throughout rehab, respect any post-operative protocol they set, and provide objective testing data for review appointments.

I haven't had surgery — can you still help?

Yes. Some ACL injuries are managed without reconstruction, and high-quality rehab is essential either way. We'll assess your knee, your goals, and your sport demands, and help you make an informed decision alongside your specialist.
